THE LEFT LANE
Good ol' boys sought

Advertiser Staff and News Services

This year, for its 20th anniversary celebration, Na Leo Pilimehana released its out-of-print "Local Boys" debut album, which made the Kamehameha trio — Nalani Jenkins (now Choy), Lehua Kalima (now Heine) and Angela Fernandez (now Morales) — instant faves with local boys and girls way back when.

Na Leo won the Brown Bags to Stardom contest in February 1984, beating out — remember? — Kelly Boy DeLima and Tia Carrere, among others. DeLima went on to become the backbone of Kapena, and Carrere emerged as a film star and voice of Nani, Lilo's sister, in Disney's "Lilo & Stitch" on the big screen and ongoing TV series.

While guesting on last Saturday's "Perry & Price" breakfast show at John Dominis, the women let it out that they want to find the "local boys" who graced their album cover: Ernie Santiago, Lyle Ames, Ellery Batno and Nathan Totman. E-mail tips to the group at naleo@hawaii.rr.com.

Films with DIFFerence

You've heard of HIFF — the Hawai'i International Film Festival, the spring and fall biggie assembling Pacific Rim and studio and indie films.

Now meet DIFF — the Digital Independent Film Festival, which premieres May 1 at the screening room of 'Olelo, the Corporation for Community Television, in Mapunapuna.

"We wanted our festival to be this kind of Anarchy Film Festival, like Slamdance is to Sundance," said Bill Corless, DIFF executive director. "We're planning our awards banquet on Sunday the second of May," location to be announced.

Originally planned to run concurrently with HIFF, DIFF decided to be, well, different, because of its focus on emerging digital technologies. DIFF submissions to HIFF are likely not to be screened, so an independent festival was organized.

Films will air on 'Olelo and on the Internet at DIFF's sister site, Insta Movie.com. Details: diffonline.netfirms.com.
