WAILUKU, Maui A Maui County Council committee last night continued to discuss conditions for approval of the Makena Resort's proposal to rezone hundreds of acres for luxury housing and visitor accommodations.
The focus of much of yesterday's discussion by the Planning and Land Use Committee was affordable housing, with one proposal suggesting that the zoning require the construction of at least one affordable unit for every market-priced unit.
Makena Resort is asking for a zone change to allow 150 acres of condos and apartments as well as a 28-acre time-share project just south of the company's Maui Prince Hotel. The resort's 20-year plan calls for construction of 89 time-share units and 1,500 mostly condo units.
The Planning and Land Use committee continued to discuss the proposal after 33 hours of testimony and deliberations over five days.
