Big Island district court judge picked

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island attorney Barbara Takase was appointed yesterday as a 3rd Circuit district court judge. She will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Sandra Schutte.

Takase, a graduate of the University of Hawai'i's William S. Richardson School of Law, is in private practice, specializing in real property, wills, trust and business law. Since 1999, she has served as a per diem judge in Big Island district and family courts. She is a former deputy prosecutor and hearings officer for the state Department of Education.

Her appointment by Chief Justice Ronald Moon is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.


Diet, exercise topic of program

WAILUKU, Maui — "Diet and Exercise for Everyday Life" is the topic of the Health Promotion Hui's March program to be held at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The free program will be 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the hospital auditorium.

Speakers include emergency room physician Dr. Ben Massenburg, who will discuss conflicting diet claims that are being promoted to the public.

Maui pedestrian hit twice, killed

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui recorded its fourth traffic death of 2004 Sunday when a pedestrian was struck by a car and then run over by a sport-utility vehicle at the Haleakala Bypass intersection with Makani Road.

The accident was reported to police at 7:30 p.m. The pedestrian, a 65-year-old man from Makawao, was pronounced dead at the scene.


Lahaina park cleanup planned

LAHAINA, Maui — Volunteers are needed for Saturday's cleanup of historic Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina town.

The LahainaTown Action Committee and Lahaina Rotary Sunrise are coordinating the event in conjunction with the Community Work Day program on Maui.

Kamehameha Iki Park is on the beachfront next to the 505 Front Street commercial complex.

Volunteers are needed from 8 a.m. to noon to rake leaves, trim hedges and trees, and pick up trash.

Supplies will be available, but volunteers are encouraged to bring gardening tools.

Refreshments will be provided.
