'Ahahui Koa Anuenue will keep its name

The University of Hawai'i has decided to hold off on plans to change the name of its primary booster club, 'Ahahui Koa Anuenue.
"In view of the misconception caused by the AKA committee's request for input as to whether the name of the organization should be changed, the AKA executive committee has tabled any consideration of a name change indefinitely," club president Bert T. Kobayashi Jr. announced in a news release yesterday.
Last week, The Advertiser obtained a copy of an internal UH memo announcing: "'Ahahui Koa Anuenue is changing its name!"
The memo, originating from the club's office and circulated by UH athletic director Herman Frazier, was sent to each member of the athletic department.
The memo noted that the committee, at the board's Jan. 20 meeting, recommended changing the booster club's name to "H Club" using UH's "H" logo.
The suggestion was widely criticized on radio talk shows.
'Ahahui Koa Anuenue, which roughly translates to "Society of the Rainbow Warrior," has been the name for the umbrella booster organization since it was formed in 1967 at the urging of then-Gov. John A. Burns.
In early 2002, UH officials and 60 stakeholders announced plans for a reorganization of Koa Anuenue.

CORRECTIONS
Scoring leaders: Mid-Pacific Institute senior Chris Perry finished tied for fifth in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu basketball scoring list with an average of 12.4 points per game. His name was inadvertently left out of the list in yesterday's Advertiser.
Also, Kapolei's E.J. Aton finished eighth in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division with an average of 11.2 ppg. A miscalculation caused him to be left off yesterday's list.
