O'ahu sweep nets fugitives

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested five fugitives wanted on federal probation violation warrants in a weekend sweep on O'ahu.

Janet Nelson, Jasson Cummings and Frankie Tano were arrested without incident in Waipahu, Wai'anae and 'Ewa Beach, respectively, said Mark Hanohano, the U.S. marshal for Hawai'i. All have been convicted of drug offenses.

Marshals also arrested Anthony Rivera in Waipahu and Tiare Kuehnl in Hawai'i Kai. Both have been convicted of theft of government property.

All five are being held in federal custody, said Hanohano.

Help needed to restore forests

The O'ahu Na Ala Hele Trails and Access program is seeking volunteers to help maintain a two-acre forest area in Makiki Valley from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 27.

Na Ala Hele is working with the Hawai'i Nature Center on the Makiki Watershed Awareness Initiative, also known as "Makiki WAI." The purpose is to restore more native Hawaiian forests in Makiki valley and use the program as a tool to teach about the watershed and ahupua'a.

Volunteers have already completed trail improvements, built two major redwood bridges and put in native plants along the Makiki trail.

The state will provide water, gloves and tools for volunteer and they ask them to wear long pants and long sleeve shirt, have good traction shoes or boots, insect repellent and their own bag lunch.

Interested people should meet at the state Division of Forestry and Wildlife base yard in Makiki at 9 a.m. For directions, call 973-9779.
