Son of judge accused in attack on teen

Advertiser Staff

A Mililani man was indicted yesterday on seven criminal counts in connection with what police called an unprovoked attack on a 17-year-old youth.

An O'ahu grand jury indicted Richard Henry Simms, 25, the son of Circuit Judge Sandra Simms.

City Deputy Prosecutor Randal Lee told Circuit Judge Richard Perkins that Richard Simms was asked to leave The Shack restaurant in Mililani Feb. 2 after he caused a disturbance, and was outside the restaurant when the youth walked by on the way home after studying with friends.

Lee said Simms attacked the youth without provocation. Lee said Simms' friends tried to pull him off the boy, and that a couple driving by thought Simms was the one being attacked and stopped to help.

Simms got into the couple's 1988 Acura, drove off and collided with a truck a short time later, Lee said.
