Shots advised before 7th grade

Since state law requires seventh-graders to have updated immunization records, the state is recommending that sixth-graders get their shots during spring break.

Participating schools are offering prizes from local merchants to encourage students to update their yellow student immunization records before the end of the year.

Students will not be able to attend school until they have complied with school immunization requirements or showed documentation that they are in the process of completing them.

Seventh-graders must have three hepatitis B shots, two MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) shots and one or two varicella (chickenpox) shots.

Families who need to find an immunization clinic in their neighborhood can contact Aloha United Way by dialing 211.

For more information about school immunization requirements, visit www.vaxtoschool.com or call the Department of Health at 586-8323 or (800) 933-4832 on the Neighbor Islands.

Students sing with opera pros
