THE NIGHT STUFF
Pussycat bash, underground hip-hop among Night Stuff

By Derek Paiva
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

People Under The Stairs will play the Wave Waikiki on Thursday night. Other acts slated for the Wave are Naked L.A.: Wet, Wild & Naked on Saturday and The Pussycat Lounge sixth-anniversary party Tuesday.
On another one of those weeks where there really is too much to do after hours, here's a handful of what appear to be intriguing standouts.

And before anyone e-mails me, no, I don't owe Wave Waikiki money.

The Pussycat Lounge sixth anniversary

  • 10 p.m. Tuesday-4 a.m. Wednesday (doors open 9 p.m.)
  • Wave Waikiki
  • $10 before 11 p.m.
  • 941-0424

Each Pussycat b'day finds party planner Flash Hansen throwing just a bit more cat-scratch fever into the mix. It'll be tough to top last year's anniversary hootenanny, but Flash gives it a shot by bringing back Limelight legend Superstar DJ Keoki. Also back in town, San Francisco dance-floor genius DJ Mei Lwun, and Las Vegas' DJ Adam Webb. The Pussycat's always-engaging residents — KSM, SubZero, Jrama and GDog — keep it homey. Or just attend to dislodge any scary leftover memories of Wilmer Valderrama channeling Keoki in "Party Monster."

People Under The Stairs

  • 9 p.m.-4 a.m. Thursday
  • Wave Waikiki
  • $12 advance
  • 941-0424

I like People Under The Stairs. And it's not just because they slotted a track called "Fly Love Song" on its most recent CD that really is; or that they simply smoke on "Drumbox," which owes more than minor props to one Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. A near-total lack of underground pretentiousness mixed with an obvious obsession with vinyl collecting is what puts PUTS slightly ahead of ordinary everyday old-school appreciating young 'uns. The duo of Mike Turner (Double K) and Chris Portugal (Thes One) should prove a fitting addition to the recent slate of underground hip-hop live shows coming through town.

Naked L.A.: Wild, Wet & Naked

  • 9 p.m.-5 a.m. Saturday
  • Wave Waikiki
  • $10, $15, $20
  • 941-0424, 591-3500

Naked L.A. is one of the City of Angels' most wildly popular havens for UK hard house and hard trance. And Wet, Wild & Naked is the clubnight's traveling after-hours road show of DJs, dance and debauchery. So, yeah, this party would have, like, zero chance of missing even if it didn't have headlining turntablists such as '90s house/techno legend Terry Mullan, house/techno/breaks/punk/funk/whatever mix-master Barry Weaver and ever-popular-in-Honolulu Reza spinning. G-Spot, Ikon, Taharba and Big Daddy Dave will represent the 808. Sure to be one of the grooviest Saturday night spots.

Kealoha CD Release Party

  • 9 p.m. Thursday (doors open 8:15)
  • Studio 1
  • $15
  • 387-9664

First off, yes, Virginia, there will still be the usual monthly edition of First Thursday to check out on April Fools' Day. On this outing, however, First Thursdays founder/slam poet Kealoha promises to transcend both that event and the model of a typical CD release party by adding elements of theater, dance and music to live readings of works from his debut spoken word CD. Guesting will be CD participants Selah Geissler, Hawaiian Ryan, b-boys/girls and hula kahiko dancers.

Admission includes a copy of the CD.
