THE LEFT LANE
A role with attitude

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Actor Eric Balfour ("Six Feet Under") says he's thrilled about his role on the NBC pilot "Hawai'i," which is filming on O'ahu through the end of the month.

Balfour plays Chris Gaines — not the sweet-shooting former University of Hawai'i basketball player of the same name, but a young Honolulu cop with attitude.

"He's a haole boy who grew up in Hawai'i," Balfour explains. "He's like a lot of local guys, with a chip on his shoulder. He takes what he's doing very seriously, but he doesn't like being pushed around, and he doesn't know how to back down."

Balfour's partner in the ensemble police drama is Ivan Sergei ("Crossing Jordan"). Sergei's character is equally strong-willed, and therein lies the potentially explosive chemistry.

Got any April foolery?

Remember the time your big sister switched the sugar and salt? Or the time Dad turned all the clocks in the house an hour ahead? Nothing inspires creativity like a good April Fool's prank. If you've ever been a perpetrator, a victim or just a reliable witness to an inspired act of April 1 trickery, we want to hear about it.

Tape it on for prom

Forget silk and satin. Some of the nation's most creative students will be going to the prom wearing duct tape.

By designing and dressing in fashions made of duct tape, couples will be eligible to participate in the fourth annual Duck-brand duct-tape Stuck at Prom Scholarship contest. With the chance to win $2,500 each for college, a little creativity and a lot of tape will go a long way. Winners will be judged on workmanship, originality, creative use of accessories and quantity of tape used.

Duck-brand duct tape now comes in 18 fashion-forward colors, so prom ensembles can still be splashed with color. Go to www.ducktapeclub.com for rules and a registration form. Photos and entries must be received by June 11.
