Forest project seeks help

Advertiser Staff

The O'ahu Na Ala Hele Trails and Access program is seeking volunteers to help maintain a two-acre forest area in Makiki Valley from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 27.

Na Ala Hele is working with the Hawai'i Nature Center on the Makiki Watershed Awareness Initiative, also known as "Makiki WAI." The purpose is to restore more native Hawaiian forests in Makiki Valley and use the program as a tool to teach about the watershed and ahupua'a.

Volunteers have completed trail improvements, built two major redwood bridges and put in native plants along the Makiki trail.

The state will provide water, gloves and tools for volunteers, who are asked to wear long pants, shirt with long sleeves, and shoes or boots with good traction and have insect repellent and their own bag lunch.

Volunteers should meet at the state Division of Forestry and Wildlife base yard in Makiki at 9 a.m. For directions, call 973-9779.
