UH football coach Helton won't return

Advertiser Staff

Tyson Helton, who was the University of Hawai'i football team's special teams coach and an offensive assistant the past three seasons, has accepted an assistant coaching job with the University of Memphis.

"I'm happy for anybody who gets an opportunity," UH head coach June Jones said. "He gets a very significant pay raise, and he's going to be coaching with his brother."

Clay Helton recently was promoted to assistant head coach.

Tyson Helton, 26, was not immediately available for comment yesterday. Jones said Helton will coach tight ends and special teams.

His father, Kim Helton, was an assistant coach in the NFL, where he and Jones worked together, and head coach at the University of Houston.

Tyson Helton was a quarterback at the University of Houston before joining the Warriors as a graduate assistant in 2000. The following year, he was promoted to full-time assistant coach, receiving the title of offensive assistant. But his main responsibility was overseeing the Warriors' special teams.

"He did a good job for us," Jones said. "He came in as a GA and did a great job. I'm happy for him. He's been involved in football his whole life, as a player and then a coach, so (the new job) is good for him."

Jones said he will wait until the summer before hiring a replacement.
