Sierra Club Hawai'i president Jeff Mikulina has been nominated to the city's Planning Commission by Mayor Jeremy Harris.
If confirmed by the City Council, Mikulina, who has a background in engineering, will join the nine-member commission, which advises the council and administration on planning issues, holds public hearings and makes recommendations on all proposals to adopt or amend the general plan, development plans and zoning ordinances.

He would succeed Brian Yahata, whose term ended on June 30, 2002, and serve until June 30, 2007.
The Sierra Club has taken stances against development, most recently when the club opposed the Koa Ridge development, arguing against adding more housing in Central O'ahu.
But Mikulina pointed out he is being appointed as an individual, not as a representative for the Sierra Club. He will also recuse himself from any decision-making on issues on which the club has taken a stance.
"I would like to think most folks view me as being fairly open-minded and knowing when to concede certain things and when to be realistic," he said.
