QUICK BITES
Takeout steak plates a success at Foodland

By Wanda A. Adams

A while back, a reader e-mailed me about something new at Foodland stores, but I didn't find time to check it out until last week, by which time the entire meat-eating universe had apparently discovered "steak days." Impatient lines form at lunchtime and pau hana for the takeout steak plates served once a week at various stores to promote Foodland's Angus Choice line. About 250 plates a day are sold, on average. Foodland spokeswoman Sheryl Toda said the promotion has been so successful that more takeout options will be added shortly.

It's a rather homespun operation: A caterer, Steak Out, sets up a grill in the parking lot and a table inside the store where workers slice up the freshly grilled steaks and dish up rice and salad from tubs. For $6.25, you get a seven-ounce steak, tossed salad, rice and a 22-ounce drink. For $8.50, there's a one-pound steak-only plate. The latter's my choice: I take the warm, medium-rare beef home and add a starch and vegetables for a hearty, easy meal for three.

Steak is served from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Here's when each store serves: Mondays, Hawai'i Kai; Tuesdays, Beretania; Wednesdays, Wahiawa; Thursdays, School Street; Fridays, 'Ewa Beach.

Steak Out also serves steak plates at the Ward Avenue Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, according to firm president Jay Cabais.

Army culinary team takes home top award

Congratulations to Hawai'i's Army Culinary Team, named installation of the year in the 29th annual Army Culinary Arts Competition this month at Fort Lee, Va. It won six gold medals, seven silver and 20 bronze. The five-member team, which had to scramble during deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, practiced nightly for three weeks with chef Ernesto Limcaco of Y. Hata & Co. Ltd., a local military supplier. Team members: Staff Sgt. Rene J. Marquis, Sgt. 1st Class David Turcotte, Spc. Karen Glanzer, Pfc. Florine Nevins and Spc. Luisa Abigale Montero. Marquis, Turcotte, Montero and Glanzer will compete in the Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany.
