Police seek man who fled arraignment hearing

Police were searching yesterday for a 21-year-old man who bolted from the District Court building on Alakea Street during a Monday arraignment.

Daniel Baldwin III
The man may be sporting a stolen purple Jamba Juice shirt.

Daniel Baldwin III was being arraigned before District Judge Fa'auuga To'oto'o on a charge he assaulted a handicapped man in Waikiki last weekend. When the judge set Baldwin's bail, he swore at the judge and ran out of the courtroom with two bailiffs in pursuit at about 11 a.m., police said.

Baldwin ran into the new Jamba Juice store on Alakea Street. Store manager Emerald Young said Baldwin walked straight to the back of the store.

"He said, 'I just ran away out of a building and the cops are looking for me and I need a place to hide away,' " Young said. "And we're like, 'No, you need to leave, we're going to get in trouble.' But he just wouldn't leave."

Young said employees tried to serve customers while dealing with the intruder. After about 15 minutes, another manager decided enough was enough.

"One of the managers had to grab him and take him out of the store, and that's when the cops came, but he ran away," Young said. She said Baldwin was a "scrawny looking guy" and the other female manager is "tall and skinny, but powerful enough to take the guy out of the store."

Before leaving, the escapee took a Jamba Juice uniform.

Baldwin has convictions for harassment and littering. He is 5 feet 5, 130 pounds, with a small build, brown hair and eyes.
