Kahuku rolls past Farrington, 63-26

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Farrington High School's first state wrestling championship came at a price for the Governors' girls basketball team, and the bill arrived at last night's O'ahu Interscholastic Association opener at Kahuku.

The Red Raiders walloped Farrington, 63-26, in a meeting of two of last year's state semifinalists. Karla Tailele scored a game-high 17 points and Aisha Ale, Mona Ale and Tina Soliai each added 10 points for Kahuku, which lost to Punahou in the 2003 state championship game.

The Governors, who had five players start practice only two weeks ago after wrestling season, trailed 10-9 after one period but the Red Raiders opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run and never looked back.

It didn't help that Farrington's best player, center Sunshine Misa-Uli, picked up her second foul in the second period's opening moments and sat on the bench for the next four minutes.

When she returned, the score was 20-10.

Misa-Uli, the 175-pound state wrestling champion, did not start basketball practice until March 8. Another starter, guard Shirlyn Tamboa, also came out late after wrestling and so did two others who are in the Govs' normal rotation.

"They practiced for one day, and then we had a game and then played in the Mililani tournament," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "So really, they had only one week of practice. We mostly worked on our press break because we knew we were opening with Kahuku. We did OK against the press, but didn't really work on our halfcourt offense and that hurt us tonight."

Kahuku returns its top six players from last season but had only eight players suited up last night. Forward Artevia Wily and guard Camilla Ah Hoy were out with knee and hip injuries, respectively.

"We knew Farrington had some girls come out late because we played them in the Mililani tournament," Red Raiders coach Wendy Anae said. "We knew they weren't in basketball form yet. But we've got our work cut out for us, too, so I'll take a win right now if we can get it."

ILH BASEBALL

• Games postponed: The four Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball games scheduled for yesterday were postponed because of inclement weather.

The games — Punahou at Iolani, Damien at Mid-Pacific, Pac-Five vs. Maryknoll at Mo'ili'ili Field, and Kamehameha vs. Saint Louis at Ala Wai Field — are scheduled to be played after the completion of the first round. The ILH has a scheduled makeup day for April 6.

• Wrong first name: Damien freshman Robert Cuizon pitched a complete game to help beat Iolani, 5-3, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu season-opening baseball game last week. A different first name was printed in yesterday's high school weekly honors.
