Tokoro was finalist for All-America honor

Cal State Los Angeles junior point guard Monica Tokoro was one of 41 finalists for the 2004 NCAA Division II Kodak/WBCA All-America Basketball Team.

She was not one of the 10 players named to the team.

Tokoro, a 2001 Iolani alum from 'Aiea, averaged 20 points and 5.1 assists per game.

The All-America team was announced at the Division II Banquet of Champions yesterday in St. Joseph, Mo.

Tokoro was also named to the California Collegiate Athletic Association first team for the third year in a row.

More Women's Basketball

• UC Santa Barbara junior forward Brandy Richardson (Kalaheo '01 of 'Aiea) had two points, five rebounds and two assists as the Gauchos recorded their second straight upset with a 56-52 win over No. 11 Houston in the second round of the Women's NCAA Tournament Monday night.

Richardson scored four points and grabbed six rebounds as the Gauchos upset No. 17 Colorado, 76-49, in the first round of the tournament, Friday at Santa Barbara's Thunderdome.

• Loyola Marymount senior guard Raelen Self (Kamehameha '00 of Makaha) had three assists and three rebounds in a starting role as the Lions fell to Baylor, 71-60, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament Saturday night at Albuquerque, N.M.

• San Jose State's Takeshi Young (Pearl City '01) placed second in the 73 kg (160.6 pounds) division in the 2004 NCJA Collegiate National Judo Championships at the Florida International University in Miami, March 19 to 21.

Men's Track and Field

• Cornell junior Ryan Schmidt (Ka'ahumanu Hou '00 of Wailuku) placed ninth in the long jump at the IC4A championships March 12-13.

Schmidt's jump was 22 feet, 10 inches.

Baseball

• Yavapai College (Prescott, Ariz.) freshman left-handed pitcher Shawn Benson (Pearl City '03) pitched a complete game, allowing four singles and striking out five in a 3-0 win over Pima (Tucson, Ariz.) Saturday.

He threw 98 pitches, and was helped by double plays in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings.

Gered Mochizuki (Baldwin '03) hit a single in the game.
