Woman killed by car identified

LAHAINA, Maui — The female pedestrian killed by a car yesterday was identified by Maui police as Barbara Hoffelt, 74, of Chicago. The collision occurred at 4 p.m. at the intersection of Papalaua Street and Honoapi'ilani Highway.

The death was Maui's sixth traffic fatality of the year — three more than in 2003 at this time — and the third involving a pedestrian, according to police Lt. Jeffrey Tanoue. There was one pedestrian death on Maui in 2003, Tanoue said.

Arraignment escapee found

Daniel Baldwin III, who fled from District Court Monday while being arraigned for allegedly assaulting a handicapped man in Waikiki last weekend, was found yesterday at a medical facility. Police declined to name the facility because of medical privacy laws.
