Woman killed by car identified

LAHAINA, Maui — The female pedestrian killed by a car yesterday was identified by Maui police as Barbara Hoffelt, 74, of Chicago. The collision occurred at 4 p.m. at the intersection of Papalaua Street and Honoapi'ilani Highway.

The death was Maui's sixth traffic fatality of the year .



Man, 48, dies after Kona fight

Big Island police have initiated a coroner's inquest into Tuesday's death of a 48-year-old man after a fight.

The dead man was identified as Bryant K. Waahila of Kailua, Kona.

Police received a report of a fight near the Kim Chong Building on Ali'i Drive just before 9:30 p.m. Waahila fell off a wall unconscious and was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital at 10:24 p.m.



NORTH SHORE

Visitor found in water dies

A 17-year-old boy from Illinois died after he was pulled unconscious from Waimea Bay yesterday.

The boy was found floating face down near the shore break at about 2:20 p.m. He was taken out of the water by friends and given CPR by emergency personnel.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed.



HONOLULU

Arraignment escapee found

Daniel Baldwin III, who fled from District Court Monday while being arraigned for allegedly assaulting a disabled man in Waikiki last weekend, was found yesterday at a medical facility. Police declined to name the facility because of medical privacy laws.

Foodbank drive begins Monday

Windward businesses will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Hawaii Foodbank 15th Annual Food Drive from Monday through April 23.

Residents can drop off donations at McKenna Motors Windward Ford, Global Village, Honda Windward, Island Printing, Kailua's Maui Tacos, Kailua's Round Table Pizza, Kailua's Straub Clinics, Boston's North End Pizza Bakery, Windward Mall, Windward YMCA, Kane'ohe Library, Kane'ohe Blockbuster Video and Twogood Kayaks.
