3 killed as car, van collide near Pahoa on Big Island

Associated Press

PAHOA, Hawai'i — Three people were killed yesterday when a car and a van collided on Kea'au-Pahoa Road near Pahoa, police said.

The collision killed the van's driver, a 65-year-old Kapoho man, and the two people in the car, a man and woman, both 52, from Arlington, Va., police said.

The car was traveling toward Kea'au when it crossed the center line and collided with the oncoming van at about 1:30 p.m., Assistant Police Chief Charles Chai said.

The accident came just three days after four Big Island residents were killed in a traffic accident on Volcano Highway near Glenwood in Puna.

The Big Island's yearly traffic death toll increases to 15, compared with four by the same time last year.
