Meeting targets school surfing

A public meeting to discuss possible solutions to issues regarding surf school operations at Kaimana/Sans Souci Beach and Tonggs Surf Break in Waikiki will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Jefferson Elementary School cafeteria, 324 Kapahulu Ave.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is hosting the meeting.

Parking will be available near the cafeteria area on the 'ewa side of the school, with entry on Wai Nani Way.

2 women hurt in car accident

Two Wahiawa women were injured, one critically, in a car accident Friday night.

Police said yesterday that a 19-year-old woman was driving a 1992 Buick Regal southbound on Kamehameha Highway at about 7:30 p.m.

She veered off the right side of the road near Waikalani Drive, and hit a tree. The driver was seriously injured in the right eye. Her passenger received head and leg injuries and was in critical condition.

Both women were taken to The Queen's Medical Center.



WINDWARD

Man, 75, dies in Kane'ohe Bay

A 75-year-old man on vacation from Japan drowned yesterday in Kane'ohe Bay, paramedics and firefighters said.

The man had been snorkeling off a tour boat, said Jason Kaneshiro of Emergency Medical Services. He got into trouble shortly after 1 p.m.

Others aboard the boat called for help and administered CPR while bringing the man in to the pier at He'eia Kea, but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.



Puppet show at Kane'ohe library

Lonokaeho, a Hawaiian puppet show by students from the Hakipu'u Learning Center, will take place at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Kane'ohe library. The free program is designed for children 8 and older. Hakipu'u Learning Center is a public charter school. For more information, call the library at 233-5676.



Activism to be focus of dinner

Grassroots activists can learn more about tapping into their strengths and skills to get their message out at a dinner discussion hosted by the Windward Ahupua'a Alliance from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Windward Community College, Hale Kuhina Room 107.

"Idealism, Money & Meaningful Social Action: Not Just Another Oxymoron" will include Terry George, who heads the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation; John Flanagan, president and CEO of Hawai'i Community Services Council, and Ron Heller, CPA. The cost is $3 but the fee can be waived for people willing to help set up.
