Islanders romp past Coyotes in opener

Advertiser Staff

DARNELL ARCENEAUX

The Arceneaux-to-Arceneaux connection led the Hawaiian Islanders to their largest margin of victory in their short history last night at Fresno, Calif.

Darnell Arceneaux threw four touchdown passes to younger brother Anthony Arceneaux as the Islanders beat the Central Valley Coyotes, 68-35, in the opener for both teams.

"They're so in tuned to what's going on," Islanders head coach Cal Lee said. "They worked hard in the offseason and worked on their timing."

The Islanders' previous largest margin of victory was 57-30 over the visiting Wichita Stealth last Aug. 1 in the first round of the playoffs.

The Islanders have won all three of their season openers.

"I thought for the first game we played fairly well," Lee said. "It's still the first game and we'll get better as the weeks go by."

Darnell Arceneaux, who ran for another score, also threw two touchdown passes to Robert Kemfort.

Anthony Arceneaux and Kemfort both caught 49-yard touchdown passes — the longest possible on the 50-yard field.

The previous team record for longest completion was 45 yards.

The Islanders' defense had three interceptions and recovered a fumble.

The Islanders have a bye next week and will play at the Louisville Fire on April 17. The home opener is the following week.
