Pearl City stops Mililani in OIA baseball

 •  Girls basketball: Punahou girls are off to 2-0 start in ILH basketball

Advertiser Staff Writer

The first couple weeks of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division baseball season are no time for tune-ups.

The schedule makers made sure of that by having several contenders face one another early, and for now Pearl City has emerged as the front runner. The Chargers (2-0) knocked off visiting Mililani, 9-4, yesterday to survive a tough week that started with a 4-0 road victory over Campbell on Wednesday.

Pearl City has a bye Wednesday before facing Wai'anae on Saturday and 'Aiea on April 7.

"It's a tough division," Chargers coach Mel Seki said of the West. "Any time you can beat (Campbell ace Tristan) Bailey and Mililani in the same week, you have to be happy. Maybe it was a blessing to be meeting them early."

Mililani (1-1) certainly did not look its sharpest yesterday, squandering a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Trojans' Tony Aquino led off the game with a home run and Mililani made it 3-0 after Ian Koki's run-scoring double and Ryan Tsutsui's bases-loaded walk.

But Pearl City answered in the bottom of the frame by tying it at 3 after an error, Corey Giammalvo's RBI double and Blayne Kamahiai's run-scoring single.

The Chargers added single runs in the second and third innings on a delayed steal and another RBI double by Giammalvo, respectively.

The Trojans closed to 5-4 in the fourth inning after scoring on a wild pitch, but Pearl City got the run back in the bottom half on Michael Higa's sacrifice fly.

The Chargers then sealed it in the sixth with three runs on three hits, an error and a wild pitch.

"We had the lead and then we kept it close, but we kept giving them free passes," Mililani coach Dean Sato said. "You can't do that against Pearl City, because that team is scrappy. They'd always get the leadoff runner on, and that put a lot of pressure on our defense. We also stranded eight runners — that's not good."

Giammalvo, the Chargers' starting pitcher, settled down after the rough first inning and struck out three in the next two frames while holding Mililani scoreless.

He was relieved by Tony Ganigan with two outs in the fourth inning after allowing a single, a sacrifice bunt and a walk.

"I wanted to finish the inning, but I knew Tony could help me out and I could work with him behind the plate," said Giammalvo, who moved to catcher after being relieved. "When we tied it up (in the first inning), I felt it was a new game and I just relaxed and threw my pitches. I just tried to work ahead in the count."

Ganigan, who was Wednesday's winning pitcher, finished the game with three scoreless innings.

"We put Tony in because we have a bye on Wednesday, and he's a gamer and wanted to throw," Seki said. "Corey is our No. 1 catcher, and asking him to pitch and catch and hit, too — that's asking a lot of a high school player. But he knows the team needs him (pitching), so any kind of innings we can get out of him is a real plus."

Seki added that Pearl City got two outstanding catches in left field from sophomore Casey Fujishige and executed its bunt game well.

"I give the kids credit, because I always tell them the first inning is one of the toughest innings and it really sets the tone," Seki said.

For the Trojans, the schedule doesn't get much easier with games against Campbell and 'Aiea on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively.

"We've gotta start clutching up," Sato said.
