Eldercare resources a click or call away

By Carol Kleiman
Chicago Tribune

With many workers faced with the task of caring for elderly parents, it's often hard to find reliable information to help ease the burden.

"Many businesses don't have employee-assistance programs, so workers are forced to figure out for themselves how to care for their aging parents — while keeping their job at the same time," said Deborah Frandsen, director of development for Missoula Aging Services in Montana. "But there are a number of resources out there."

The best place to start, Frandsen says, is on the Web site called the Eldercare Locator (www.eldercare.gov). "It will lead you to the closest area agency on aging," Frandsen said.

Two Honolulu agencies are listed: the city Elderly Affairs Division and state Executive Office on Aging.

"A phone call or e-mail to its information and referral program will help connect you to all the different resources available in the community," she added.

The director points out that volunteer opportunities also are listed for elders who "are relatively fit and active."

For those more infirm, "programs such as Meals on Wheels can help guarantee your parents are getting good food in addition to being checked on. You also can find specialized transportation for help in getting your parents to doctors' appointments, allowing you to stay at work."

Hawai'i residents can also call the 211 telephone hot line operated by Aloha United Way for referrals to agencies that offer services for the elderly.
