'Pink Panther' cameo possible for soccer star Beckham

Will "The Pink Panther" bend it with Beckham?

Soccer star David Beckham is negotiating a cameo in a "Pink Panther" remake.

International soccer star David Beckham is negotiating to make a cameo in the remake, which features Steve Martin as bumbling French Inspector Clouseau — the role originated by Peter Sellers in the "Pink Panther" films directed by Blake Edwards.

Beckham would play a soccer player in the film, which follows a detective solving the murder of a famous soccer coach and the theft of the Pink Panther diamond.

Whether the English midfielder can take the role hinges on whether the shooting schedule would present any conflicts with his regular job, MGM spokesman Eric Cops said Friday.

"We want him to do it and he wants to do it, and as long as the filming dates and his working dates work themselves out, it will happen," Cops said.

The cameo would be the first feature film appearance for Beckham, who was shown in archive footage in Gurinder Chadha's film "Bend It Like Beckham."

"The Pink Panther," scheduled to start production in May, will also star Kevin Kline, Beyonce Knowles and Jean Reno. It is scheduled for a July 2005 release.

Beckham, who plays for Real Madrid, is one of soccer's best-known players. His fame has spread far beyond soccer, in part his changing hairstyle and marriage to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham.
