Celebrating poetry

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Beginning April 1, the Academy of American Poets will launch the National Poetry Almanac, at www.poets.org, bringing on 365 days' worth of bon mots, activities, ideas and history for poetry lovers of all measures. "The almanac will help extend the celebration of poetry from April to year-round," said executive director Tree Swenson (April was established as National Poetry Month in 1996). Find a poet, choose a poem, write a verse.

Oral self-defense

Gwen Fujie
Ever get the feeling that your mouth has a mind of its own?

Maybe you need to learn the basics of "Tongue Fu."

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa is hosting a communications course based on author Sam Horn's books, "What's Holding You Back?" and "Tongue Fu!"

The tongue-in-cheek explanation is that this is about "martial arts for the mind and mouth," and Hawai'i motivational speaker Gwen Fujie will teach techniques to deflect, disarm and defuse verbal conflict.

The workshop and lunch will be from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 13 at the UH-Manoa Campus Center Ballroom. It's $12 ($7.50 for students) if you register by April 8 or $15 ($10 for students) for late registrations. For details, contact Michi Fu at 956-7927 or michi@hawaii.edu.

'Passion' popularity

Despite its R rating, "The Passion" is attracting younger people, box-office watchers report. The film, which vividly depicts Jesus' physical torture, is even being promoted on horror-movie sites that draw legions of young male readers. ("The bloodiest, goriest, flesh-rippingest film your churchgoing grandma will ever want to see," according to www.amazing-colossal.com).

Few predictions about the film have proved accurate. Its success in the Bible Belt was expected. But no one expected "one of the highest-grossing theaters (to be) the AMC Empire in Manhattan.
