Boys arrested in attack on father
Two teenage boys were arrested yesterday after their father was attacked with a kitchen knife and a hammer, police said.
The man had his throat slit and was hit on the head at about 1:30 a.m. while sleeping in an apartment in Kalihi, police said.
The boys are 14 and 16, police said. Officers were called to the scene by the boys' mother.
The man was taken to Kaiser Medical Center in serious condition, while the boys were taken to the juvenile detention center.
DOE complex official named
Estelle Wong has been named the state Department of Education's complex area superintendent for the Kaimuki and Kalani complexes.
Since January 2002, Wong directed the Student Support Services Branch in the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support. Before that she was principal of Olomana School. Wong was named Hawai'i's High School Principal of the Year in 2000.
McKinley grads prepare to sing
The McKinley Alumni Association will hold its annual Karaoke Challenge April 17 at the McKinley High School cafeteria and auditorium.
The Karaoke Challenge helps raise money for scholarships and provides financial support to several student organizations including the math team, science fair, robotics team, Project Graduation and the drama club.
Graduates of McKinley High School auditioned in January and the winners will be selected by the audience. Tickets for the show are $15 and include a bento dinner. For tickets, call Tom Katsuyoshi at 949-5659.

Anti-abuse event Sunday
Anti-abuse organizations will provide information and promote public awareness of domestic violence at the annual "No Excuse For Abuse" from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at Windward Mall center stage area.
Sponsored by state Rep. David Pendleton, R-49th (Maunawili, Enchanted Lake, Kane'ohe), the event will include entertainment by Waiola Wizards' Balloon Ministry, Pacific Island Praise and Miss Hawai'i 2002 Kehaulani Christian.
Helpers sought for cleanup
Volunteers are being sought for a Kahalu'u/Waihe'e Coastal Clean-up Project from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. April 17 beginning at the canoe halau across the street from Kahalu'u Regional Park.
The cleanup includes lunch and an educational presentation at KEY Project from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers should wear work clothes and closed-toed shoes for muddy conditions.
The event, in honor of National Youth Service Day, is in collaboration with State Farm Good Neighbor Program, Community Works in 96744, the Marimed Foundation and KEY Project. For details call Connie Sizemore at 236-2288 Ext. 275.
