Stanford edges Hawai'i in softball final, 1-0

Dana Sorensen pitched a no-hitter with no walks and 13 strikeouts as host Stanford beat Hawai'i, 1-0, in the softball championship game of the Stanford Classic yesterday.

Sorensen faced 22 batters, one over the seven-inning minimum. She hit Stacey Ritter with a pitch in the fifth inning.

Jackie Rinehart scored an unearned run on Catalina Morris' single to center field in the fifth.

Hawai'i's Melissa Coogan (6-10) pitched a five-hitter with three strikeouts.

Stanford is 27-7, UH is 18-19.


BASEBALL

• Riverside routs UH-Hilo: John Martinez pitched a six-hitter as UC Riverside beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 8-0, yesterday at Wong Stadium.

Martinez walked none and struck out three. Five of the Vulcans' hits were singles.

Five Hilo pitchers issued 11 walks.

Kyle Barratt was 2 for 4 with a double for the Highlanders and Tony Festa hit a two-run homer in the third inning.

Hilo is 7-26 and UC Riverside is 18-12.

On Saturday night, Jose Shaw threw eight scoreless innings to lead UC Riverside past Hilo, 7-1.


GOLF

• Rainbow Wahine finish 13th: The University of Hawai'i women's golf team finished 13th yesterday at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz.

Sara Odelius, a freshman from Helsingborg, Sweden, led the Rainbow Wahine by finishing tied for 12th with a three-day total of 225.

Portland State freshman Lisa Kajihara, a 2003 graduate of King Kekaulike on Maui, finished 10th, eight strokes behind the leader.

Kim Welch of Washington State won medalist honors with a 2-under 214 and Denver won the team title by eight strokes.


WATER POLO

• UH women beat Quebec: The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team edged Quebec, 7-6, on the final day of the Rainbow Classic at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex yesterday.

UH's Beth Novick and Darcy Scott-Hosaka each scored two goals, while Mari Yogi, Shannon Carroll and Makana Whitford each had one.

The Rainbow Wahine (9-8) went 3-1 during the three-day tournament. UCLA beat UC Santa Barbara, 4-3, to win the title.

UH plays UCLA at 6 p.m. today.


ARENA FOOTBALL

• Islanders tickets on sale: Individual game tickets for Hawaiian Islanders arenafootball2 games will go on sale today.

Tickets range from $7 to $35.

The Islanders will play eight games at Blaisdell Arena.
