Hawai'i's Carlsen honored by WAC

Clary Carlsen was a pitcher of efficiency in notching his first complete game of his University of Hawai'i baseball career.

The senior from Poulsbo, Wash., used 109 pitches to dispose of Louisiana Tech on Saturday in an 8-1 victory at Ruston, La. He was rewarded yesterday by being named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

"My last complete game (in junior college) I threw about 170 pitches," said Carlsen, who also beat No. 4 Rice on the recent road trip. "This (last game) was a little more efficient."

He is the fourth Rainbow to win weekly conference honors. Pitcher Ricky Bauer, catcher Matt Inouye and third baseman Rocky Russo were previous selections.

Carlsen was charged with an unearned run on six hits with no walks while striking out four in improving to 5-3.

"He was outstanding from start to finish," UH coach Mike Trapasso said. "He never got into any real trouble throughout the game."

Carlsen just kept his pitches low in the strike zone.

"Runs come by the bunches there so it makes you focus more on trying to keep the ball down in the zone," Carlsen said. "At Les Murakami (Stadium), you can get away with a few up in the zone because nothing flies out of our park."

With freshman Darrell Fisherbaugh's emergence as a closer, Carlsen has been set as a starter. Carlsen said he would like to think that he could handle the on-call role of closer and starter.

"You'd like to think you could do both," Carlsen said. "I'm kind of more in a groove, getting a hang of what I'm supposed to be doing."
