Kai proves her worth for U-21 U.S. team

University of Hawai'i sophomore Natasha Kai proved she belonged.

Kai, who is one of the first from Hawai'i to be invited to play on the Under-21 Women's National soccer team, scored a goal in all three matches during the team's recent trip to China, according to ussoccer.com.

Kai, the two-time Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, scored in the third minute against the Shanghai team in a 4-0 win March 21.

She scored in the 60th minute in a 2-0 win over the China Women's Youth National Team on Thursday.

She had a goal in the 20th minute and an assist in a 2-0 win against the China Women's National Team on Saturday.

Kai, who led the nation in scoring with 29 goals last season, started all three matches.

Kai will rejoin the UH soccer team, which is in spring training.

PREP BASEBALL

• Kalani 12, Farrington 0: Reed Matsumura pitched a three-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts as the host Falcons beat the Goverors yesterday.

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division game was ended after six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Kalani's Randy Kitagawa had two triples and drove in four runs.

• Wai'anae 5, Waipahu 1: Clayton Uyechi struck out 10 batters in five innings as the Seariders beat the Marauders in an OIA Western Division game yesterday.

Wai'anae's Mike Ferreira hit a solo homer and Sonny Dudoit went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

TRACK

• UH women sixth: The University of Hawai'i women's outdoor track and field team finished sixth out of 12 teams in the Rice University Bayou Classic this past weekend in Houston.

UH's Dana Buchmann finished second in the 800 meters (2:09.86) and 1500 (4:31.78).

Teammate Kelly Young took second in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.03.

Rice won the meet with 130 points. UH finished with 61.



SOFTBALL

• Hilo swept on road: San Francisco State swept a doubleheader with visiting Hawai'i-Hilo yesterday by identical 3-2 scores.

In the first game, Holly Pearce and Sonja Garnett combined on a four-hitter for San Francisco State.

Hilo's Sarah Steele pitched an eight-hitter.

In the second game, Garnett pitched a four-hitter.

The Vulcans' Tara Martinez pitched a seven-hitter.

San Francisco State improved to 19-10; Hilo dropped to 16-18.
