Crash victims identified

HILO, Hawai'i — Police yesterday identified two Arlington, Va., residents who died Saturday in a collision on the Kea'au-Pahoa Road.

Clifford Weiss, 53, and his wife, Miya Nishimura, 52, were killed when their rented Dodge Neon sedan crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming Chrysler van.

Also killed in the crash was the van driver, Harry K. Makua, 65, of Kapoho.

'Kick Butts' event at Capitol

The Coalition for a Tobacco Free Hawai'i is sponsoring today's ninth annual "Kick Butts Day" at the State Capitol, designed to raise awareness about the dangers of cigarette smoking.

The event is from 8 to 11 a.m. and features people and programs working to prevent young people from starting to smoke and helping those who want to quit.

Kamehameha Schools middle-school students will perform tobacco-education skits. There also will be a bell-ringing in remembrance of the people who have died of tobacco-related illnesses.


Legal aid group targets needy

The Legal Aid Society of Hawai'i is recruiting attorneys and volunteers for a Partnership in Pro Bono project.

Partnership in Pro Bono will link attorneys to residents who have legitimate civil legal claims, but lack the resources to hire an attorney.

Volunteer attorneys are asked to contribute a minimum of six hours, or one case per year. Legal Aid also seeks nonattorney volunteers to serve as paralegals and as volunteer guardians ad litem in family court. For more information, call 527-8025.


Library to host free programs

Two free programs will be held Saturday at the Hawai'i State Library.

A program on Local Genealogy, led by Luci Meyer, Hawaiian registry coordinator at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, will be at 11 a.m. in the library's Hawai'i & Pacific Section. Meyer will discuss genealogy and share sources that are used in searching for family information.

A program called Personalized Feng Shui will be at 1 p.m. in the library lobby. Alan Lum, a feng shui practitioner and author, will lead.

Tour of historic sites planned

A historic sites tour of Kawainui Marsh and Maunawili Valley will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday beginning at Ulupo Heiau in Kailua.

Anthropologist Paul Brennan will lead the tour that includes Queen Lili'uokalani's retreat and ancient restored taro terraces in the valley. The tour is sponsored by the Kawai Nui Heritage Foundation and the Kailua Historical Society. A $5 donation is requested.
