Saturday's Tinman Biathlon canceled

The 20th annual Tinman Biathlon, which had been scheduled for Saturday, has been canceled, according to a press release from organizer Olga Caldwell.

Registered participants will receive a refund in the mail, the release said. No reason for the cancellation was given. Caldwell did not immediately return calls for comment last night.

The Tinman is a 2.7-mile run and 800-meter swim at Ala Moana Park and Magic Island.

SUPER BRAWL

• Vitale victorious: Hawai'i's Falaniko Vitale defeated Arizona's Keith Winters in the main event of the Super Brawl 34 mixed martial arts event before about 2,000 at War Memorial Gym, Maui, on Sunday night.

Vitale forced Winters to submit 1 minute, 12 seconds into the first round. Vitale (17-3) is ranked No. 1 in the 195-pound class in the Super Brawl organization.

In other bouts: Kolo Koka defeated Tyson Nahooikaika, first-round knockout; Tony Espitia defeated Bryon Monterde, first-round submission; Kendall Groves defeated Kaipo Kalama, second-round submission; Corey Daniels defeated Ed Ferreira, decision; Kelii Nalu defeated Jason Walghen, first-round submission; Ed West defeated Harris Sarmiento, first-round technical knockout; Justin Mercado defeated Adam Alverez, first-round submission.

WATER POLO

• UCLA edges UH: Defending national champion UCLA held off Hawai'i, 5-4, last night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Katherine Belden and Kristina Kunkel each had two goals for UCLA.

Beth Novick scored twice and Amber Lumb made nine saves for Hawai'i (9-9 overall, 3-5 MPSF).

BASEBALL

• HPU wins pair on road: Hawai'i Pacific swept host Cal State Dominguez Hills, 7-0 and 8-3, yesterday.

Zach Blatteis scattered three hits over seven innings en route to his third win of the season. Greg Benoit had two hits and two RBIs to lead HPU (18-17) in the opener.

Alika Kuraoka homered in the second game for HPU.
