The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament with a 5-0 victory over Nevada yesterday at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in Houston.

UH's quarterfinal match against Southern Methodist was suspended because of rain and has been rescheduled for today. The Hawai'i-SMU winner faces Tulsa, which beat UTEP, 4-1, in the quarterfinals.

In its victory over Nevada, UH got singles victories from No. 1 Lauren Fitzgerald, No.4 Paige Mainor, No. 5 Kimberly Curtis and No. 6 Renata Camargo. Doubles teams of Fitzgerald and Mainor and Justine Boutet and Camargo also won. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 9-13.

The UH men's team was swept 4-0 by Boise State yesterday. The Rainbow Warriors finished their season 8-15.

The WAC championships conclude tomorrow.

UH coach at workshop: First-year University of Hawai'i men's tennis coach John Nelson will speak at a U.S. Tennis Association/Hawai'i Pacific Section workshop May 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park.

Nelson will talk about improving play in competitive tennis, sharing his perspectives on "balance, focus and hitting without fear."

He came to UH after helping Cal State-Hayward, UC-Davis and San Diego State to the NCAA playoffs. A third-degree black belt in jujitsu, Nelson incorporates martial arts and theories into his program.

Juniors, parents, players and coaches may attend the free workshop. No registration is required. Call Madeleine (955-6626) for more information.

Repeat performance: Gavin Hopper and, schedule permitting, Pat Cash are returning to the Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex for July camps.

High Performance Training will be July 5 to 9, with sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

Cost is $625, with a $150 daily rate for those who cannot commit to the full week. The camp fee includes lunch.

A three-night adult camp will be July 5 to 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cost is $270, or a daily rate of $125.

Youth camps also are being planned.
