Mid-Pacific edges Maryknoll

Iolani edges Punahou to gain tie for ILH lead

Chris Goya scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh inning yesterday to give Mid-Pacific a 4-3 victory over Maryknoll in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball tournament at Iolani field.

Mid-Pacific (13-3), the ILH regular season champion, advances to play Kamehameha in the double-elimination tournament at 6 p.m. today at Ala Wai Field. Maryknoll plays Iolani at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Owls loaded the bases in the seventh with one out, but on a grounder to third, the third baseman threw to second, allowing the winning run to score.

The Spartans went out to a 2-0 lead, but the Owls scored three runs in the sixth. The Spartans then tied the game in the top of the seventh.

Punahou 11, Pac-Five 2: Justin Ariki batted 3 for 4 and Mark Veneri went 2 for 3 with three RBIs as the Buffanblu broke open a 5-2 game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth at Ala Wai Field.

Punahou (12-4) plays Saint Louis at 3 p.m. at Ala Wai Field. Pac-Five plays Damien at 10 a.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.

Saint Louis 17, Damien 7: Kaulana Kauleinamoku hit a grand slam in the sixth inning as the Crusaders defeated the Monarchs at Mid-Pacific Field.

The game was shortened to six innings because of the league's 10-run rule.

• Second-place game: Lahainaluna and Moloka'i will play at 1 p.m. today at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, Maui, to determine second place in the Maui Interscholastic League.

The Lunas scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 10-4 victory over St. Anthony yesterday. The Farmers defeated Maui, 4-3.

The MIL's second-place team plays the Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up on May 15 for a state tournament berth.
