ARENAFOOTBALL2
Bossier-Shreverport rips Islanders, 61-42

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaiian Islanders were dealt some bad news before yesterday's road game against the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings, and things didn't get much better by the time the game ended.

Bossier-Shreveport (2-3) took a 17-point lead early in the second quarter, and held off an Islanders' rally to prevail, 61-42, in an arenafootball2 game at the Century Tel Arena in Louisiana.

Before the game, Islanders defensive coordinator Doug Semones was suspended for his role in a fight against the Battle Wings at Blaisdell Arena on April 17.

The league earlier issued the one-game suspension, which was upheld yesterday after an appeals process.

"That's the way it is," Islanders head coach Cal Lee said. "If it comes late, you have to go with it."

Semones traveled with the team, but had to stay at the team hotel. Darren Hernandez, the Islanders' defensive line and linebackers coach, called the defensive plays.

Bossier-Shreveport went up 23-6 on a 1-yard run by Joe Webber four minutes into the second quarter.

The Islanders (3-2) closed to 37-34 on a 6-yard run by quarterback Darnell Arceneaux, but Bossier-Shreveport quickly re-seized control.

"We were in the game, we had opportunities to score," Lee said. "We were down by three and didn't get it done."

A key play occurred when Islanders defensive specialist Eddie Klaneski intercepted a pass from Sherard Poteete, but hurt his knee on the return and dropped the ball. The Battle Wings' Shadrick McAfee recovered and ran it 26 yards to make it 48-34 early in the fourth quarter.

Arceneaux completed 19 of 39 passes for 219 yards and four touchdowns for the Islanders, whose next game will be at the San Diego Riptide next Saturday.
