Punahou's Pate stops Saint Louis

Punahou pitcher Jared Pate out-dueled Saint Louis' Marc Nobriga to keep the Buffanblu undefeated in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball tournament with a 1-0 victory at Ala Wai Field.
Punahou (2-0) plays Kamehameha (2-0) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Aloha Stadium in the double-elimination tournament. Saint Louis (1-1) plays Iolani (1-1) at 4 p.m. at Aloha Stadium on Tuesday.
Pate pitched a one-hitter, striking out three and walking two. He faced 23 batters, two over the minimum, allowing a single to Ryan Sasaki in the third inning. Nobriga pitched a two-hitter, striking out six and walking five.
Punahou scored its run in the first inning. Shaun Kiriu walked, went to second on a grounder by Mike Lam and scored on a single by Mark Veneri.

Kamehameha 4, Mid-Pacific 2: Kamehameha scored two runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Mid-Pacific at Ala Wai Field. Mid-Pacific (1-1) plays Pac-Five (1-1) at 7 p.m. at Aloha Stadium Tuesday.
Eli Ching, Travis Young and Nick Freitas each had two hits for the Warriors. Kanekoa Texeira pitched a three-hitter, striking out nine and walking four.

Iolani 3, Maryknoll 1: Iolani left-hander Wally Marciel pitched a three-hitter, striking out 11, and Iolani scored three runs on four hits, a walk and a sacrifice in the third inning at Les Murakami Stadium. The Raiders are 7-9. Maryknoll finished its season 1-14-1.

BIIF BASEBALL
Waiakea undefeated: Miles Ioane went 3 for 3 and Avery Kagawa and Ronnie Loeffler each had three RBIs to lead undefeated Waiakea to an 11-1 victory over Kea'au in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation baseball tournament semifinals yesterday at Warrior Field in Hilo.
Waiakea (12-0) won the regular-season championship and one of the BIIF's three state tournament berths. Waiakea plays Honoka'a (8-4) for the tournament title Wednesday.
Honoka'a defeated Hilo, 6-5, in the other semifinal to also earn a state berth.

Lahainaluna second: Codey Alexander scored the go-ahead run on a suicide squeeze by Casey Kawaguchi in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Lahainaluna to a 3-2 victory over Moloka'i in the Maui Interscholastic League tournament for second place yesterday at Wailuku, Maui.
Lahainaluna (10-4) will host the ILH's second place team on May 15 for a berth in the state tournament. Baldwin (13-1), the MIL champ, already has clinched a state berth.

Kamehameha 42, Maryknoll 40: Analee Viena-Lota scored on a putback with 26 seconds remaining to lift the Warriors past the Spartans in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls game at Damien gym.
Maryknoll took a 24-16 halftime lead, but Kamehameha started the second half with a 7-0 run and took a 31-29 lead after three quarters. India Soo hit two 3-pointers in the Warriors' third quarter and finished with 16 points.

Pearl City sweeps: Pearl City defeated Farrington in sudden death to win the O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls judo team championship yesterday at 'Aiea High gym. Pearl City's boys defeated McKinley, 48-37, in the finals of the boys championships. McKinley beat Moanalua, 50-43, and Pearl City routed Kahuku, 77-20, in the semifinals.
In the girls title match, Pearl City and Farrington finished tied at 50. Pearl City beat McKinley, 60-40, and Farrington stopped Kahuku, 62-30, in the semifinals.
