Bauer named WAC Pitcher of Week

By Stacy Kaneshiro

For the second time this season, University of Hawai'i right-hander Ricky Bauer has been selected as the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced today.

Bauer (7-2) pitched three-hit ball with eight strikeouts over nine scoreless innings in UH’s 10-inning, 1-0 win against Nevada on Thursday. Guy McDowell added a scoreless ninth and picked up the win after the Rainbows scored in the bottom of the 10th on Matt Inouye’s sacrifice fly.

Bauer’s first weekly honor of the season was Feb. 16 after beating Florida International, 14-6. He pitched eight innings, allowing an unearned run, on six hits with four strikeouts in that game.

Player of the Week honors went to Louisiana Tech outfielder Jeff Walker. He was 9 for 14 (.643) in helping the Bulldogs take 2 of 3 from Fresno State. It turns out that Louisiana Tech’s doubleheader sweep on Sunday helped the Rainbows (10-8 WAC, 26-16 overall) maintain sole possession of second place in the WAC. Had FSU swept, it would have been tied with UH for second.

Hawai'i first baseman Andrew Sansaver was a nominee for the Player of the Week honor. He was 5 for 11 with two RBIs against the Wolf Pack.

The Rainbows, who took 2 of 3 from Nevada over the weekend, will play Division II Hawai'i Pacific in a non-conference game at 6:35 tomorrow tonight. The game is a makeup for a March 13 rainout. Ticket stubs and vouchers from that date may be used tomorrow night.

Steven Wright (2-1), who pitched a scoreless inning of relief in Saturday’s 8-3 loss to Nevada, will start for the Rainbows.

Hawai'i Pacific (27-26) played its final home game on April 25 with a doubleheader sweep of UH-Hilo at Aloha Stadium. It would have been the Sea Warriors’ season finale had it not been for the make-up.

The Sea Warriors are led by infielder Geoffrey Say, who is batting .374. His 68 hits broke a 19-year-old school of 65 set by Les Akeo. Greg Benoit leads HPU with a .385 batting average. He has 65 hits.

The Rainbows resume WAC play Friday with a three-game series against defending national and conference champion Rice, ranked third in the nation this week in Baseball America’s top 25. The Owls (16-1, 33-7) have a commanding 6›-game lead over UH. Rice’s only WAC loss is against UH. The Rainbows salvaged the third-game of the three-game series at Rice on March 21 with a 5-3 win. Clary Carlsen allowed three runs in 5° innings in picking up the win.

The Owls were idle over the weekend. They play McNeese State tomorrow before arriving here. Rice has not lost consecutive games this season.
