Giants edge Marlins

Associated Press

Yorvit Torrealba and Barry Bonds thought they had the day off. Instead, they worked overtime to get host San Francisco another victory.

Yorvit Torrealba celebrates after his RBI double in the 11th gave San Francisco a 9-8 win over Florida.

Torrealba hit a second-inning grand slam, then doubled home Bonds in the 11th inning of the Giants' 9-8 win over the Florida Marlins yesterday.

Torrealba, the Giants' backup catcher, wasn't in the lineup until moments after batting practice, when A.J. Pierzynski was ruled out with a sore right shoulder. Torrealba responded with three hits, including his first career slam, in San Francisco's third straight victory over Florida.

"I was sad a little bit, because my family just left for Venezuela and didn't get to see it," Torrealba said. "It's tough when you don't play, but I just try to take advantage of whatever I can."

San Francisco scored 27 runs in the wins with no homers from Bonds, who still got the Giants' final rally started as a pinch-hitter. Bonds, who spoke of his fatigue earlier in the week, is nursing a sinus infection that kept him up for much of the night.

He didn't even change into his uniform until the late innings.

"I didn't want to use Barry," manager Felipe Alou said. "I've been there before. You use all your energy by playing, playing, running ... We had to put him in, but we knew they weren't going to give him much to hit."

In the 11th, Bonds drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on Brian Dallimore's single off Matt Perisho (2-2). Torrealba drove a double off the wall in left-center, and Bonds jogged home.

Tyler Walker (2-0) got his second victory in three days. He struck out Mike Lowell with two on in the 10th, then pitched a hitless 11th.

Lowell and Luis Castillo drove in two runs apiece for the Marlins.

• Cardinals 1, Cubs 0: Scott Rolen lined a bases-loaded single to the warning track with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting St. Louis over Chicago.

Carlos Zambrano had a career-best 12 strikeouts for the Cubs, matching zeros with Matt Morris, who allowed four hits in nine scoreless innings for the Cardinals.

Jason Isringhausen (2-0) gave up one hit in a scoreless 10th.

• Houston 6, Cincinnati 5: Brad Ausmus' suicide squeeze scored Lance Berkman and capped a three-run rally in the eighth inning for host Houston, which won its fourth in a row.

Dan Miceli (1-1) allowed one run and one hit in two relief innings, and Octavio Dotel earned his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.

• Phillies 6, Diamondbacks 5: Ricky Ledee drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the 14th inning to lift host Philadelphia.

After the Diamondbacks took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 14th on Matt Kata's RBI single, Philadelphia tied it on David Bell's RBI double, and won it when Ledee's walk scored pinch-runner Randy Wolf.

• Pirates 4, Brewers 3: Craig Wilson drove in three runs, including a leadoff homer in the 11th to propel Pittsburgh to its sixth straight road win.

Brian Meadows (2-0) got the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Jose Mesa pitched the 11th for his ninth save, and third of the series.

• Rockies 13, Braves 4: Luis Gonzalez hit a three-run homer and host Colorado took advantage of seven errors by Atlanta — including four by third baseman Mark DeRosa.

The Braves tied a franchise record with their seven miscues, which led to eight unearned runs.

• Mets 6, Padres 2: Tom Glavine (4-1) pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts over six innings and also hit an RBI single, helping New York snap host San Diego's six-game winning streak.

Danny Garcia hit his first homer of the season for the Mets, who avoided a three-game sweep and completed a 3-6 road trip.

• Expos 6, Dodgers 4: Orlando Cabrera put visiting Montreal ahead to stay with a solo homer in the sixth to make it 3-2, and Juan Rivera added a two-run homer in the eighth and Brad Wilkerson hit a solo shot in the ninth as the Expos snapped a six-game losing streak.

Sun-Woo Kim (1-0) earned his first win in the majors since July 2, 2002, allowing two runs and four hits over five innings with four strikeouts.
