UH softball players sweep honors

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i swept the Western Athletic Conference's softball weekly honors after splitting a four-game series with Louisiana Tech in the Rainbows' home season finale over the weekend.

Junior catcher Denise Dahlberg was named the Player of the Week, while junior right-hander Shannon Tabion was named the Pitcher of the Week, the WAC announced yesterday.

Dahlberg, of Chandler, Ariz., was 6 for 14 (.429) with two home runs, a double, one steal and four RBIs. Her three-run home run in the series finale Saturday helped the Rainbows win, 5-3. It was her team-leading ninth home run of the season. She leads the team with 27 RBIs. This was Dahlberg's first weekly honor for the season; she earned her first last season.

Tabion, a Baldwin High graduate, won the second game in each of Friday's and Saturday's doubleheaders with complete games. In UH's 3-0 win Friday, Tabion fired a two-hitter, walking one and striking out eight. In Saturday's 5-3 win, she allowed three runs — all unearned — on five hits with three strikeouts. In both games, she allowed no extra-base hits and held the Bulldogs to a .135 batting average. She improved to 16-9. This was Tabion's third weekly honor.

The Rainbows (8-12 WAC, 26-31 overall) close out their season with a four-game series at San Jose State starting Friday.
