Castillo wins Hall of Fame title in playoff

With a birdie on the second playoff hole, Ron Castillo Jr. captured the Verizon Hawai'i Hall of Fame Championship yesterday at The Plantation Course at Kapalua at Maui.

Castillo, representing Kiahuna Golf Course, had a two-day total of 2-under-par 144.

Kirk Nelson finished second and Brian Sasada was third at 145. Both are from Makena Golf Course.

Rich Fite (153) was one shot better than Larry Stubblefield (154) to win the Senior Division, and Ron Castillo Sr. (157) won the Super Senior Division.

Hawai'i sixth at WAC Championships: The University of Hawai'i men's golf team is in sixth place after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Fresno, Calif., yesterday.

UH senior Matt Kodama is tied for sixth after a 1-under-par 70. Southern Methodist's Will Dodson and Tulsa's David Inglis are tied atop the leaderboard at 67.

SMU is seven strokes ahead of San Jose State and Fresno State at 277 to lead the team competition. Hawai'i is 13 strokes back at 290.

The tournament concludes today at San Joaquin Country Club.

BYUH, UH-Hilo men's postseason rescheduled: The 12th-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's tennis team will bypass regional competition and advance to the NCAA II National Championships May 12-15 in Altamonte Springs, Fla., after top-ranked Hawai'i Pacific withdrew from the postseason.

Last week, the NCAA ruled two HPU players ineligible. In addition to forfeiting all the matches the two players competed in, HPU also forfeited its Pacific West Conference championship.

BYUH (22-6) is the two-time defending NCAA champion and is led by three-time PacWest Player of the Year Jan Krejci. In another regional, UC-San Diego (13-8) will host Hawai'i-Hilo (13-11) today in a rescheduled match.

The winner advances to the round of 16 in Florida.

BYUH women host regional: The top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's tennis team will host one of the NCAA II West Regional tournaments and face Cal Poly Pomona in the first round Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the BYUH courts in La'ie.

In another match, Cal State-Los Angeles (14-5) will play Hawai'i Pacific (11-11) in the opening match of the tournament at 9 a.m.

BYUH (29-0), the two-time defending NCAA champion, enters the tournament against Cal Poly Pomona (8-11) with a 95-match winning streak. BYUH is led by three-time Pacific West Conference Player of the Year Adrienn Hegedus.

The winners of Thursday's matches will play Friday at 2 p.m. for the right to advance to the NCAA II National Championships May 12-15 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

UH player honored: University of Hawai'i women's tennis player Lauren Fitzgerald was named to the All-Western Athletic Conference second team.

Fitzgerald helped UH get to the quarterfinals of the WAC Championships this past weekend at Houston.

Hawai'i lost to Southern Methodist in the quarterfinals. SMU finished second, falling to Fresno State, 4-2, in the final.

The Rice men captured the WAC title, beating Southern Methodist in the final, 4-1.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Scott, Rogers lose in final: Punahou graduate Sean Scott and his partner, Todd Rodgers, lost in the men's final of the AVP Austin Open on Sunday in Austin, Texas.

The duo of Jake Gibb and Adam Jewell capture the title, 21-12, 21-18.

Fellow Buffanblu alumnus Stein Metzger and his partner Dax Holdgren finished third while former UH volleyball player Jason Ring ended seventh with his partner George Roumain. Kevin Wong, of Pearl City, and Eric Fonoimoana placed seventh as well.

In the women's competition, former Rainbow Wahine Heidi Ilustre and Tanya Fuamatu finished ninth while Misty May and Kerri Walsh won their 13th consecutive pro beach volleyball.

SAILING

UH coed team wins: The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team completed the school's second Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association sweep, taking the Coed Dinghy title Sunday.

Sunday's win at Stanford, Calif., comes after UH won the women's title in Honolulu last week and the team race title at Stanford on Friday.

Hawai'i's coed team defeated second-place Southern California by 13 points.

UH and USC qualified for the ICSA Coed Dinghy North American Championships, held in Cascade Locks, Ore., on June 2-4.
