UH falls to eighth in WAC golf

University of Hawai'i-Manoa dropped two slots, to eighth, yesterday after the second round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships. The tournament concludes today at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif.

The Rainbow Warriors were paced by a trio of 3-over-par 74s, shot by Matt Kodama, Kellen-Floyd Asao and Pierre Henry Soero. UH had a team total of 14-over-298 and, at 588 through two rounds, trails first-place Southern Methodist by 20 shots.

Kodama (144) is tied for 15th, five behind leader Graham DeLaet of Boise State, who shot 68 yesterday.

Asao (147) is tied for 24th, Cody Wolfenbarger (76—149) 30th, Soero (152) 37th and James Beston (81—155) 46th.

SMU is trailed by Texas-El Paso (574), Fresno State (575), Tulsa (576), Boise State (578), Nevada (581), San Jose State (581), Hawai'i (588), Rice (589) and Louisiana Tech (613).


• UHH still in seventh: University of Hawai'i-Hilo remained in seventh place at the NCAA Division II West Regional yesterday. The tournament, which ends today, is hosted by Western Washington at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Leilehua graduate Nick Mason is the Vulcans' leader after firing a 1-under-par 71 in the second round. He is tied for seventh at 1-under 143 after two rounds. Cal State-Stanislaus' Ryan Thornberry is the leader at 138.

Vulcan Garrett Okamura shot a 2-under 70 and is tied with teammate Colin Gilliam (74) in 18th place at 146. Kevin Shimomura shot 75 both days and is tied for 29th, while Joe Saliba (80-79) is tied for 43rd.

Chico State took over the team lead at 8-under 568.


TENNIS

• UH-Hilo ends season: UC-San Diego defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 5-0, in an NCAA Division II men's regional yesterday at the Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla, Calif.

"Our guys played well," UHH coach Kula Oda said. "We just met up with a team that was hitting their shots."

The Vulcans ended their season with a 13-12 record. The Tritons (18-9) advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships.
