Waipahu man dies following 3-car crash

A 52-year-old Waipahu man died at The Queen’s Medical Center about 2 1/2 hours after being critically injured in a three-car collision on Kunia Road yesterday afternoon.

According to the medical examiner’s office, Timothy Toledo died at 5:44 p.m. The collision near Plantation Road was reported to police at 3:15 p.m.

Police said the victim was driving a pickup north on Kunia Road when it was struck head-on by a Chevy van at about 3:15 p.m. Witnesses told police the driver of the van, a 48-year-old man, had been speeding and passing cars in the south direction.

Police said the van had just completed a pass when the pickup slowed to avoid a collision. The pickup then was rear-ended by another car, which was driven by a 41-year-old man. That forced the pickup into the path of the van and they collided.

Two other drivers were taken to Queen’s in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the medical examiner’s office reported yesterday that Lawrence "Blue" Nihipali, 50, died of cardiac arrhythmia and not injuries related to Tuesday’s car crash on the H-1 Freeway near Waikele.

Nihipali’s mother, Eleanor Nihipali, had said earlier that he had left work early because he was not feeling well.

There have been 26 traffic deaths on O'ahu this year, compared with 31 at this time last year.
