"You look at the other schools, they all have coaches on campus," the 1996 Saint Louis alumnus said. "I did it for my family. I have to think about what's best for my family."
Arceneaux said he was "promised there would be a job" for him, but was told several weeks ago by athletic director Todd Los Banos that there would be no opening.
Arceneaux said he has no ill feelings toward his alma mater, which he guided to three O'ahu Prep Bowl titles as a player, and led it to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title and state runner-up last season in his first and only season as coach of the winningest program in the O'ahu private schools league. His record is 9-2. But he is disappointed for his players.
"It's a shame they've had three (different) coaches in three years," Arceneaux said.
When Cal Lee resigned after the 2001 season as the winningest coach in state high school history, long-time assistant Delbert Tengan took over the 2002 season, guiding the Crusaders to an ILH and state title. But Tengan resigned after the season and Saint Louis did not hire Arceneaux until late June. At the time Arceneaux was hired as coach, he had said the school was looking for an on-campus job in physical education or religion.
Arceneaux said he will continue working for the Hawaii Sports Network's Athletic Prep Academy, which finds college scholarships for high school seniors. He also is the quarterback for the af2 Hawaiian Islanders.
