Wai'anae stops Kailua in OIA baseball, 7-6

By Brandon Masuoka

After four years of baseball domination by Kailua, there will be a new O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion this season.

Ransen Sylva drove in three runs and Wai'anae's defense turned a key double play in the seventh inning as the visiting Seariders eliminated the four-time defending OIA champion Surfriders, 7-6, yesterday in the first round of the OIA tournament.

"It's a boost for the program," Waianae coach Kekoa Kaluhiokalani said. "We really beat a good team in Kailua. They got a lot of tradition."

Wai'anae (7-4), the West No. 6 seed, will play West No. 2 seed 'Aiea (9-1) today at the 'Aiea Recreation Center.

Wai'anae scored six runs after two outs in the third inning to take a 6-2 lead. Dillon Guzman drew a bases-loaded walk, and Allen Holt and Sylva each followed with two-run scoring singles. Charleston Low capped the scoring with a run-scoring single.

Kailua (7-4), the East No. 3 seed, scored once in the bottom of the inning on Kevin Matsumoto's bases-loaded walk. In the fourth inning, Kekoa Sua's two-run homer made it 6-5.

In the sixth inning, Wai'anae's Sylva drew a bases loaded walk to make it 7-5.

Kailua mounted a last-ditch rally in the seventh. With no outs, Sean Medeiros took second on a two-base outfield error, advanced to third on a balk, and scored on a misplayed fly ball to short right field.

With a runner on first and no outs, Wai'anae's defense turned a double play in support of relief pitcher Guzman. After hitting the next batter, Guzman got the final out on a flyball to center.

"I was just trying to pitch for strikes and trying to get the first out," Guzman said. "The double play helped our team a lot. It got us energized. I really thank my defense for that."

"Waianae's a good team," Kailua first baseman Ryan Rodrigues said. "We just came out flat until the last inning. We can't do that against teams in the playoffs."
