UH's Azenha second team All-American

Advertiser Staff

Pedro Azenha, a University of Hawai'i outside hitter, yesterday was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America second team.

"I thought somebody from our team would be picked," said Azenha, a 6-foot-7 junior from Brazil. "I didn't know it would be me. You could say I was surprised. I'm really honored. I have to thank my teammates."

Azenha played all three outside positions. He opened the season as the starting opposite hitter, moved to left-side hitter and finished as a primary passer.

"I wasn't as consistent as I wanted to be, but I think changing positions had something to do with that," he said.

Azenha averaged 3.92 kills per game. He also had 39 aces. His 12 solo blocks were the most by a Warrior outside hitter.

Tulsa's Inglis wins WAC again: Tulsa's David Inglis became the second golfer in NCAA history, after Justin Leonard, to win his conference championship four years in a row when he captured the Western Athletic Conference title yesterday by two shots over Kaua'i High graduate Casey Watabu.

Southern Methodist won the team title, closing with a 1-over-par 285 for a three-day total of 853 at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif. Tulsa was second, 11 strokes back. Hawai'i finished eighth at 297—885.

Inglis shot 2-under 69 yesterday. His tournament total of 4-under 209 was two shots better than Watabu (70), a junior at Nevada, and UTEP's James Allenby (71). Rainbow senior Matt Kodama moved up to eighth with a final-round 71 for 215.

Kodama was named to the all-WAC first team yesterday, along with Inglis, Graham DeLaet (Boise State), Chris Baryla (UTEP) and Chad Spencer (Fresno State). Watabu is on the second team.

Baryla was named Player of the Year, SMU's Colt Knost Freshman of the Year, and SMU's Jay Loar Coach of the Year. The 10 coaches vote for all-conference honors.

UH-Hilo's Morgan finishes third: Hawai'i-Hilo's Nick Mason shot a final-round 4-under-par 68 yesterday and finished in third place at the NCAA Division II West Regional in Bellingham, Wash.

Mason finished at 5-under 211 at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Mason's finish, as one of two best low scores of individuals not playing for a team advancing to the National Championship, qualifies the junior from Wahiawa for an automatic berth to the NCAA II National Tournament at Orlando, Fla., May 12 to 15.

Cal State-Stanislaus' Ryan Thornberry was the tournament's individual champion, two strokes better at 7-under 209. The Division II's top-ranked player, J.J. Jakovic of Chico State, finished second at 210.

Chico State won the team title with a 9-under 855, 13 shots better than St. Martin's. UH-Hilo placed sixth at 875.

Novick named All-MPSF: University of Hawai'i junior Beth Novick was named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation first team yesterday.

Novick, a 2-meter player, led the MPSF in scoring with 64 goals for a 2.29 per game average.

The Rainbow Wahine, who did not place any other players on the All-MPSF teams, finished eighth at last weekend's league championships.
