Driver not seriously hurt in downtown collision

A Chevy Blazer was hit broadside as it crossed the intersection, spun around and landed on its side in Beretania’s far-left lane. No one was seriously injured.

A 2002 Nissan Sentra traveling mauka in a center lane had "T-boned" the Blazer as it crossed into the intersection, said patrol Officer Kevin Tarita.

The driver’s side of the Blazer was crushed when the sports utility vehicle hit the pavement, he said. The driver, a woman in her 30s, emerged and was taken to Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center for observation.

Tarita said that similar accidents happen often in this intersection because drivers on either side race through on a yellow light.

Man extradited in 1997 theft

A 38-year-old man indicted in May 1997 on charges of stealing more than $65,000 from KOKUA Nurses accounts was arraigned today in Circuit Court after being extradited from Chicago.

Kenneth Hopkins did not enter a plea and will appear in court again at a later date, said Jim Fulton of the Prosecutor’s Office.

Hopkins’ bail is $100,000.

A second Laumaka escapee remains at large. Gordon Morse, 32, failed to return to the facility April 30.
