THE LEFT LANE
Glittery finger glass

Advertiser Staff

When it comes to bling-bling, the Italians know how to do it right. Whether it's the real bling thing (diamonds from Bulgari, perhaps?) or a magnificent piece of Murano glass, bold is better. Murano, an island just north of Venice, has been known for its glass-making since the Middle Ages.

Now Zoe Weston of Diamond Head, who is a former anthropologist, is importing hip, funky Murano glass rings that can be worn equally effectively with jeans or a prom gown. The rings come in two styles and a rainbow of colors. They sell for $35 and $55 at Bella Bella in Ala Moana Center, the Contemporary Museum Gift Shop, Jeff Chang Pottery stores and Prosperity Corner in Kaimuki.

Pitch in, Dad

"Seeing men perform domestic duties teaches children cooperation and democratic family values," says Scott Coltrane, a professor of sociology at the University of California-Irvine, in the latest issue of Parents magazine.

Coltrane analyzed data from more than 3,000 families. Among his findings: Kids whose dads perform chores are more likely to get along with peers and less likely to be troublemakers at school than those whose mothers do all the work.

High-chair hygiene

Missy Cohen-Fyffe was fed up with eating out with her little ones — but those grimy high chairs? Yuck. From food to saliva and all sorts of bacteria, the unhygienic chairs can be germ city.

So the New Hampshire mom invented "Clean Diner," a one-piece cloth cover that fits snugly over restaurant high chairs to keep babies safe from germs. It comes complete with a safety strap. She also developed the Clean Shopper for shopping carts. Both come with a choice of fabrics: pink, blue or zoo animals.

They're available online at www.cleanshopper.com. The Diner costs $22.95 and the Shopper, $29.95, plus shipping and handling.
