Advertiser wins 6 first-place awards

The Honolulu Advertiser won 16 awards yesterday in the Hawai'i Publishers Association's Pa'i Awards contest for work published in 2003, including six first-place awards.
Sports writer Ann Miller took two first-place awards for her coverage of golf phenom Michelle Wie in the editorial feature and sports reporting categories.
Staff writer Mike Gordon's series, "Suffering in Silence: Hawai'i's Elderly Victims," took first place in the investigative reporting category. Investigative reporter Jim Dooley won third place for his story on Honolulu police whistleblower Kenneth Kamakana.
First-place honors in editorial series went to the Big Island bureau's Kevin Dayton for his "Children of Ice." Capitol Bureau reporter Lynda Arakawa won second place for her stories on the state Supreme Court.
In editorial enterprise, Capitol Bureau reporter Gordon Pang took first place for his story on the criticisms of University of Hawai'i President Evan Dobelle.
The Advertiser's design staff won first place in the design (newsprint) category for its coverage on Iraq. The staff also took third place for its "We Got Him" design upon the capture of former Iraq leader Saddam Hussein.
The Advertiser also won second place in spot news coverage; second and third place, business and industry reporting, Andrew Gomes and Will Hoover; third place, feature photography (newsprint), Jeff Widener; second place, cover design, Nick Gervais; third place, illustration, Martha Hernandez; and third place, informational graphics, Hernandez.
