HPU's Choy Foo best in PacWest

Hawai'i Pacific senior shortstop Brandy Choy Foo was named Pacific West Conference softball Player of the Year, and teammate Kara Wedemeyer was named PacWest Freshman of the Year, the league announced yesterday.

Hawai'i Pacific placed the most players on the PacWest first team with five, followed by Hawai'i-Hilo with two. Western New Mexico pitcher Angela Slaugh earned her third consecutive PacWest Pitcher of the Year honors. The league's coaches voted on the selections.

Choy Foo, of Waimanalo, led the league in four offensive categories. She won the batting crown with a .371 average, and topped the conference in on-base percentage (.457), runs scored (38) and doubles (16).

Wedemeyer, an infielder from Battle Ground, Wash., was seventh in batting average (.313), eighth in on base percentage (.376) and seventh in total hits (47).

Hawai'i-Hilo's Sarah Steele, from Fontana, Calif., topped the PacWest Academic All-Conference team with a 3.96 GPA in health and physical education. Nine other Hawai'i players earned Academic All-Conference team honors. To qualify for academic honors, student-athletes must be in at least their second year at their respective schools and have at least a 3.30 GPA. (Complete list in For the Record, Page D5.)

UH-Hilo signs player: Meghan Jost, a multi-position player from Wilcox High in Santa Clara, Calif., has signed a national letter of intent with Hawai'i-Hilo, according to coach Callen Perreira.

"Meghan's versatility will be a welcome addition to our program," Perreira said. "She's a left-handed catcher who also plays first base and outfield."

TENNIS

BYUH, HPU, UHH in regional finals: Three Hawai'i Division II women's tennis teams advanced to today's NCAA Division II West Regional finals after posting semifinal victories yesterday in La'ie and Hilo.

The 19th-ranked Hawai'i Pacific women's tennis team defeated California State University-Los Angeles, 5-1, and the top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's team defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 5-0, yesterday at the BYUH courts.Ê

HPU (12-11) will play host and two-time defending national champion BYUH (30-0) in the finals today at 10 a.m. BYUH has a 96-match winning streak.

The 11th-ranked Hawai'i-Hilo women's tennis team beat Sonoma State University, 6-0, at the UHH Tennis Courts.

UHH (17-5) hosts the University of California-San Diego (18-8) in the finals today at 1:30 p.m.

Today's winners will advance to the 16-team, single-elimination NCAA II National Championship tournament in Orlando, Fla., Wednesday to Friday.

GOLF

UH's Odelius 21st in regional: University of Hawai'i freshmen Sara Odelius shot a 2-over 74 was tied for 21st after the opening round of the NCAA Women's West Golf Regional yesterday at Stanford, Calif.

UCLA's Hannah Jun opened with a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke lead over teammate Charlotte Mayorkas and San Jose State's Ashley Gomes.

Odelius is one of three golfers playing as individuals and not members of a team.

Kaua'i High alum Rachel Kyono, playing for Pepperdine, shot a 73.

UCLA leads the team competition with 282.
