BYU wins NCAA menâs volleyball title

Brigham Young won its third menâs volleyball national championship in six years, defeating Long Beach State in five games at the Stan Sheriff Center today.

The scores in the NCAA final were 15-30, 30-18, 20-30, 32-30, 19-17.

A crowd of 3,108 watched the top-ranked Cougars (29-4) rallied from a 10-6 deficit in the final game, and survived two 49er match points.

BYU setter Carlos Moreno, who had two key kills in the final game, was named the tournamentâs most outstanding player.

Joe Hillman had 14 kills for BYU, while Jonathan Alleman and Fernando Pessoa each added 13 kills and combined for 15 digs.

Scott Touzinsky had a match-high 17 kills for the 49ers. He added five aces and eight digs. A Touzinsky hit into the antenna ended the match.

Long Beach State, ranked No. 2, finished (28-7), four of its losses were to BYU.

The Cougars, who won their last national title in 2001, lost last yearâs championship match in five games to Lewis. BYU beat Lewis in three games on Thursday to reach the final.
