The first thing I ever cooked for my mother was a Mother's Day breakfast of creamed eggs on toast points — a dish now completely passˇ but considered quite a test of your cooking skill back then.

I remember how proud I was and how awkward my mother looked balancing the tray on her knees, smiling gamely and digging in. I realize now that, for an active person like her, who probably had a million things to do, to remain in bed was in itself an act of love and support.

Cooking for Mom (or Grandma or Auntie) is still a Mother's Day tradition and an activity that can help Dad and kids (or older and younger siblings) bond. Just be sure to tip off Mom that she needs to stay in bed tomorrow morning. Prop a homemade card up on her pillow tonight, announcing that she's to be served breakfast. Allow her to choose the place and time. Perhaps you could set up a special little table on the lanai or in the yard.

Donna Hay, the Martha Stewart of Australia, has written a book that's a perfect resource for enticing, super-simple, well-explained and well-illustrated recipes, called "Cool Kids Cook" (HarperCollins, hardback, $15.95). Her version of the popular ham-and-egg breakfast sandwiches goes together in minutes and offers tasks that can readily be divided up among older and younger children.

This is a great opportunity to teach children that recipes can be flexible. Use bacon or grilled tofu rather than ham, if Mom prefers. Choose a cheese she likes. If she's watching cholesterol, choose Egg Beaters or a similar product.

For these, you need firm-crusted dinner rolls; soft biscuits would fall apart. The recipe is for two but you can easily increase it to accommodate any number.

Camile Velasco will greet Honolulu fans

CAMILE VELASCO

Camile Velasco, the "American Idol" contestant from Ha'iku, Maui, will make two appearances — one on O'ahu this weekend, the other on Maui — to thank her fans and supporters.

The Honolulu meet-and-greet will be from 1 to 3 p.m. today at Dave & Buster's in the Ward Entertainment Complex, where weekly Tuesday viewing parties are held for "American Idol" fans and voters. Radio station I-94 (KIKI FM) is sponsoring the session, open to the public.

The Maui event is at 3 p.m. May 18 at a hotel in West Maui, and is by invitation only. Pacific Radio Group (KPOA FM, KNUI FM and KJMD FM) is sponsoring that event.

Velasco, who was voted off the show on April 7, and Mililani's Jasmine Trias, still in contention for the "Idol" crown, will both be part of a summer "Idol" tour. Neither Honolulu or Maui is on the itinerary.

Food bank to get big delivery

It's the day to do a good deed, and you don't have to stray far from home to do it.

Leave nonperishable food items at your mailbox, and the letter carriers will haul everything off to the Hawaii Foodbank.

The National Association of Letter Carriers' annual food drive is the nation's biggest one-day effort, encompassing more than 10,000 cities.

Lunalilo School celebrates its 75th

Lunalilo School is celebrating its 75th anniversary, and the public is invited to join in. The event, 2-6 p.m. today at the school (810 Pumehana St., McCully), includes entertainment, a photo exhibit and a lu'au (3-4:30 p.m.; $15). Admission is free. Learn more about the school online, too, at lunalilo.k12.hi.us. 973-0270.

It's reigning cats and dogs at the pet expo this weekend

Bet you didn't know that both National Pet Week and Be Kind to Animals Week wind up today — but the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association sure does, and that's part of the motivation for Hawaii Pet Expo 2004, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and tomorrow at the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall.

This year's theme is "People and Pets: a Loving Bond." Dog, cat, bird and fish clubs, nonprofit animal welfare organizations, businesses providing pet products and services, crafters and others will participate.

Highlights today include a Hawaii Doggie Bakery fashion parade at 11 a.m.; a parade of cats (really!) at 11:30 a.m.; and a Sirius puppy training demo at noon.

Highlights tomorrow include a canine fashion show at 10:30 a.m. and a Hawaii Kennel Club puppy match at noon.

Sessions both days will address fish care, rabbits and even wild bird rehabilitation. There will be a petting zoo on Sunday only.

Admission is free. Dogs on a leash are also welcome. Information: 845-1762.

Hang with Mom on beach at Sunset

It's another Sunset on the Beach weekend in Waikiki, with food booths, entertainment and movies on that 30-foot screen.

Both movies are fitting treats for Mother's Day celebrations: Tonight's is the family film "The Haunted Mansion," starring Eddie Murphy and inspired by the Disneyland attraction; tomorrow's is the romantic "Love Actually," starring Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and others who hope love conquers all.

Sunset on the Beach begins at 4 p.m. each day; the movie screens after the sun goes down. Admission is free.

'Barbarian' to hit Big Island theater

The Oscar-winning film "The Barbarian Invasions" will be screened at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, on the Big Island, beginning tomorrow. Winner for Best Foreign Film, it's the tale of a dying man who reconciles with his estranged son. It's rated R and is in French with English subtitles.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday; 5 and 7:30 p.m. May 14-16; and 7:30 p.m. May 19.
